Author and Holocaust Survivor Eva Kor

Kor was subject to Nazi concentration camp medical experiments on twins, conducted by German SS officer and physician Josef Mengele. This podcast is all about the art of songwriting as Arts and Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack hung out at the Local Blend in St. Joseph August 24 to the 26, 2012 for the second annual Weekend of Songs songwriter festival. 

The three day festival of singer/songwriter performances, open mics, meet-ups, and jam sessions celebrating songs and songwriters included stunning performances by songwriters from around the country, around the state, and around our local community. 

Topping off the weekend was the "18 hour Songwriting Challenge" where Rocori High School student Nathan Ness walked away with the Golden Ukulele after composing a song from a topic picked out of a hat.

For those who didn’t know, there is a thriving community garden on the campus of SCSU, and this is the time of year when planning, preparation, and planting all take place.  Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack talked with SCSU Professor Tracy Ore in the spring of 2012. In this news feature, Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack explores Revolution, Reaction, and Reform in History.  This is the theme for the 2012 National History Day competition for students in grades 6 through 12 being hosted by the Minnesota Historical Society at the Miller Learning Resource Center on the campus of St. Cloud State University this Saturday March 17 beginning at 9 AM.  The Central Regional Event in Minnesota for National History Day is free and open to the public to see projects which will make it to the next level of competition, taking place in April at the University of Minnesota.

In this feature interview, Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack talks with retired SCSU Arts Professor Ted Sherarts about the Collective Memory of the Arts in St. Cloud.  Since late November 2011, Visual Arts Minnesota has been hosting this ongoing conversation moderated by Sherarts and involving a good number of longtime artists from the community.  Through these conversations, and through the art which has been brought and discussed during these events, the history of art in St. Cloud has not only come to life, but also been recorded.

On a recent Saturday afternoon, the Little Falls Community High School Art Club took over Great River Arts to glaze pottery in preparation for their Empty Bowls fundraiser for the “Oasis Share a Meal” organization on Sunday, Jan. 29. It was at this event that Jeff encountered the dedicated volunteers, innovative staff, and inspired artwork of the Great River Arts Association as well as the conversations that follow.

Jan Phillips is a visionary author and dynamic speaker who ignites original thinking and inspires evolutionary action. Her most recent book is titled "No Ordinary Time: The Rise of Spiritual Intelligence and Evolutionary Creativity" and she’ll be holding a workshop on creativity at the Paramount Visual Arts Center on Wednesday October 26th beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Meyer's story is of special interest to all of us here at KVSC as this is the second time this year that a member of Stefan’s Dream—a longtime team of our annual “Trivia Weekend” contest—has appeared on "Jeopardy!" Meyer of St. Joseph, Minn. has participated on Stefan’s Dream since his days at Apollo High School in St. Cloud, Minn. and has even played while serving on active military duty in Iraq. Julia Carlis, also of Stefan’s Dream was on “Jeopardy!” earlier this year.

Professor Lehman has written a new book, "Slavery in the Upper Mississippi Valley, 1787-1865."  This discussion of the complicated nature of slavery within the United States touches upon the legal and social cultures of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota during the time of slavery, and also sheds light on various incidents of slavery that have been documented in St. Cloud.

Now in its second year, this program gives children in our area a chance for artistic recognition as well as the opportunity to use the proceeds from their art sales to support another youth based non-profit, Kids Against Hunger.

Eileen Ivers’s current project is entitled “Beyond the Bog Road” This is a multimedia concert of music, story, dance, and film which celebrates the journey of Irish immigrants into North America where their culture and music met and evolved with the other roots music of the time to become one of the cornerstones of what we understand to be our cultural heritage.

In this FeaturesCast, News Director Chris Duffy talks to Ellingson about his success as a leading conceptual film designer, his experience as a student at SCSU and how he got to where he is today. Ellingson had a main role in establishing the look of the human presence on the alien world of Pandora in "Avatar." As lead vehicle designer, Ellingson was a major player in helping Director James Cameron carry out his legendary vision for the interstellar 3-D adventure; Ellingson designed all but two of the vehicles that were so prevalent in the film.

Ellingson has an impressive resume that includes visual effects art director on Steven Spielberg’s 1993 “Jurassic Park" and has two blockbuster films due out later this year. Listen to this podcast for a preview of his special presentation.

Arts & Cultural Heritage Reporter Jeff Carmack visits with SCSU Professor Rex Veeder about this Sunday’s Head Water Blues Basement Riff Fundraiser for Take Heart Minnesota at the Pioneer Place Theater. As the lead coordinator of St. Cloud Pridefest, Aldes talks about the organization process and what one can expect to find during the festivities. Potter previews priorities for the 2008-09 academic year and reflects on his first year in the top post.

The summit brought together higher education representatives, tribal leaders, activists and students who are working to change sports team names and end the use of American Indian images as symbols and mascots. The university initiated the summit to raise awareness of the issue, provide a comfortable forum for Indian students and faculty to discuss their concerns and develop a policy that representatives could take back to their campuses.

An estimated 1,000 participants were part of the summit. A traditional pipe ceremony, two speak-out panels were held, one comprising University of North Dakota students, staff and faculty, and another that included Clyde and Vernon Bellecourt and other American Indians. UND students described being the target of discrimination, hate mail and death threats. (Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Performance newsletter, spring 2001)

Buck O’Neil visited St. Cloud State University on October 15, 1997. He gave hugs, signed autographs, and shared his endearing personal story. The presentation was sponsored by the department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science under the guidance of Dr. Ray Collins, faculty emeriti.

The Harvard educated economist and mother of three has returned to Minnesota to work on the White Earth Land Recovery Project.

She explains complex environmental sustainability issues in a way that the listener feels motivated and connected--not overwhelmed.  Maathai's visit was sponsored in part by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at SCSU.

Bradbury gave the keynote address at the dedication of the James W. Miller Learning Resources Center on October 20, 2000 at St. Cloud State University. He shared his passion for writing, including how he was inspired as a 12-year old boy to write short stories by a carnival character named Mr. Electrico in his northern Illinois hometown. Bradbury also speaks of his love of libraries and those who support them.

Weddington spoke at St. Cloud State University on the 30th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision on January 22, 2003. She was a guest as a part of the Women’s Center’s Women on Wednesday series. She answered the four most frequently questions she is asked about the case:

• How did she get involved in Roe v. Wade?
• What was it like to argue a case before the Supreme Court?
• How did you find you had learned Roe v. Wade?
• What is different today?

Ralph Nader spoke at St. Cloud State University’s Ritsche Auditorium shortly after the high court ruled in favor of Bush.  His speech was delivered on January 31, 2001 and focused on the “Corporatization of America” and was sponsored by NOVA-Non Violent Alternatives.

The group had a list of demands for the university, including creating a student diversity center, hiring and retaining more faculty and staff of color, and forming a committee to consider a Chicano-studies program.   KVSC radio presented a retrospective news feature on the tumultuous year.

A professor emerita at the University of California-Santa Cruz, Davis has prodded America's social conscience for nearly 40 years. Her presentation was "Feminist Change: A New Era."

Davis burst onto the scene in 1970 when she was the subject of a nationwide dragnet for her alleged role in a shootout at the Marin County Hall of Justice near San Francisco. A Black Panther Party supporter and Communist Party USA member, Davis was arrested, tried and acquitted in 1972.

The 65-year-old is an advocate for feminist causes, racial equality, and the abolition of prisons and the death penalty.

Vicki & Erik tell the heart-wrenching story to bring attention to the issues of stalking and domestic abuse. Their presentation was sponsored by the SCSU Women's Center in commemoration of National Stalking Awareness Month.
