Since November 1993 KVSC's Sports Department has adopted the policy of not broadcasting Native American team mascot names in stories and within KVSC play by play coverage. This policy is in place to recognize and respect Native Americans, First Nation's, and Indigenous People's perspectives on team mascot names.
The Minnesota Historical Society has traced the name "Sioux" to French fur traders shortening the name "Nadouesioux" which means snake-like enemy. The true name of the tribe called Sioux is Dakota. The word "Dakota" means friend or ally.
The Minnesota State Education Board has mandated all high school teams with an Indian nickname change their mascots.
The Washington Redskins are being sued in federal court by American Indians. The case is being heard on trademark protection on grounds the Redskins trademark on the moniker violate the law as being "disparaging" and "scandalous".
