Derek E

Derek.jpg1.)    When did you get involved with 88.1 FM?

Officially: Summer of ‘09

2.)  What show(s) do you currently host on KVSC and what programs have you hosted in the past?
Most of them by now, but Alternative 13/ Crispy Bacon New Music Showcase, Crispy Critics, and most importantly URBAN INVASIONS!!!
3.) Please list some of the artists and musicians you consider to be a must play on your show(s)?
Gotta show love to the best in our backyard at 10 such as Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Doomtree, Eyedea and Abilities, Unknown Prophets, Big Quarters, Wide Eyes, Guante, The Tribe & Big Cats!, Mally, Desdamona, Toki Wright, I Self Devine….anybody bringing that heat in Minnesota.
4.) Why are you involved with independent community radio at 88.1 FM?
To air out the airwaves because the mainstream’s getting really bad (especially with what they call hip hop).
5.) What is in your personal CD player, iPod, or mp3 right now (BE HONEST)?
NaS, Pharoahe Monch, CunninLynguists, Macklemore, Big K.R.I.T., Ras Kass, Saigon, Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9’’, Dilated Peoples, Fashawn, Nino Bless, Common, Aesop Rock, Grieves, Kendrick Lamar, Wu-Tang Clan, Sage Francis, Black Starr, Rakim, Big L, Big Pun, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, the Rhymesayers Camp, Doomtree Crew, A Loud Heart, X-Ecutioners, Guante, Bad Religion, Saul Williams, Frank Turner, Death Cab for Cutie, Gnarls Barkley, Adele, MGMT, Counting Crows, The Gaslight Anthem, Alicia Keys, NOFX, Hugo, Astronautalis, Against Me!, Aby Wolf, Anthony Hamilton, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye…Basically nothing but good music.
6.) Please disclose the most embarrassing music moment or concert you’ve attended or album you’ve bought (perhaps even shameful)?

(Goodbye positive self-esteem.) I choked up horribly on the mic the first time that I freestyled at this dude’s house (long story). I was a star struck mess when I met Brother Ali in a back alley. And I am sad to say that I actually had multiple volumes of ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilations when I was younger (I believe I had volumes 5-13 before I pawned them).
7.) What are your hobbies and interests?
I try to rhyme when I find the time (that’s right, it’s a gift), listening to music, watching TV and movies, and hanging out with my friends.
8.) When you are not at work or KVSC, where can you most likely be found?
Whenever I’m on not on my grind, stuck in class, flexing at the gym or doing my thing at KVSC, usually I can be found popping up everywhere and anywhere.
9.) If it were the end of the world and you could only take five things with you, what would they be (BE HONEST)?
So what are the circumstances in this apocalyptic scenario? Am I being shot into space? Will there be electricity? And I think I speak for everyone in this new world society with "why are you letting me in?" Depending on the situation:
1. My Notebook
2. iPod
3. Headphones
4. A scrapbook to remember my ole life.
5. Probably something random that I would want at first and later regret over choosing something really cool like a harpoon gun or butterfly net.
10.)    What do you think is the future of radio?
I don’t claim to possess the ability to see the future anymore, but aside from continuing its innovations for the internet, it’s gonna go wherever the people tell it to go.
11.) If you could be an animal what animal would you be and why? I am an animal, ask Prof.
12.) What is the most interesting listener request or inquiry you have received while hosting? A man once asked if I still had my bike that he had bought me. After a 10 minuted conversation, he figured out that in fact I was not his son and hung up immediately. Nice guy though.
13.) What is your favorite KVSC memory? I would say it’s a tie between receiving fan mail from prison and introducing Doomtree and A Loud Heart at the Red Carpet.
