The Archaeology of Bear Ceremonialism Online History Event
September 22 @ 7:00 pm
Reverence for bears was an ancient and widely held tradition in the history of the northern world. From Scandinavia, across Siberia, Japan and North America, anthropologists have identified shared themes concerning hunts, feasts and the treatment of the slain bear by otherwise distinct cultures.
The Morrison County Historical Society in Little Falls presents “The Archaeology of Bear Ceremonialism,” featuring guest speaker David Mather, who will discuss the worldwide concept of bear ceremonialism and, in the context of wildlife biology, a zoo-archaeological study of bear remains from Minnesota.
This event will take place online via Zoom on Tuesday, September 22, at 7 p.m. Those who do not have internet access can join over the phone.
David Mather is the National Register Archaeologist for the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office. He has worked as a professional archaeologist in Minnesota for more than 30 years.
