SUMMARY:MICHAEL SHYNES & MATHEW FOWLER @ Milk & Honey Ciders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for summer night of acoustic music at the Milk and Honey bandshell. We welcome Minnesota’s own Michael Shynes and Colorado singer/songwriter Mathew Fowler for a double bill. \nMichael Shynes flies with inspired musical creativity and reaches the sort of heights we aren’t accustomed to hearing performers match so early in their careers. Shynes’ dedication has paid off and he’s well on his way to embodying his every musical ambition. His vocal abilities occupy a lofty position indie music will simply never be able to contain. We are privileged to witness his ascent and\, if he continues writing and recording songs this good\, his skyward climb will be swift. \nDocumenting all the joy and wonder and heartbreak and confusion of life in your early 20s\, Matthew Fowler’s stunning label debut\, The Grief We Gave Our Mother\, is a profoundly personal work of self-discovery and introspection\, but more than that\, it’s an ode to growing up and chasing dreams. The songs here wrestle with love and loss in the face of ambition and independence\, and the arrangements are captivatingly complex to match\, layering dynamic guitars\, breathy woodwinds\, and lush harmonies into a transcendent soundscape that blurs the lines between traditional roots music and experimental chamber folk. The result is a record that’s at once bold and timid\, hopeful and anxious\, world-weary and naïve\, an honest\, revelatory collection all about forging a life of purpose\, passion\, and meaning. \nBorn and raised in Florida\, Fowler fell in love with music at an early age\, and by 19\, he’d already self-released his debut and begun booking his own cross-country tours. Critics were quick to take notice\, with American Songwriter praising Fowler’s “earnest\, strummy songcraft” and The Bluegrass Situation proclaiming that his “assured\, velvety vocals are rivaled only by the intimacy of his lyrics.” In addition to helping Fowler land support slots with everyone from Richard Thompson and Damien Jurado to Angel Olsen and The Weepies\, the music also caught the ear of acclaimed producer Shane Leonard\, who invited Fowler to Eau Claire\, WI\, to complete work on The Grief We Gave Our Mother in 2020.

DESCRIPTION:Congratulations\, you have just stumbled upon your next favorite country band.  The Broken Spokes are a beloved Texas traditional country outfit with a name synonymous with country due to the famous Austin honky tonk. Having focused on live shows\, as opposed to aspiring for some sort of national attention\, The Broken Spokes might just be the best band you’ve never heard of. They’re looking to change that with their new album Where I Went Wrong and the country music world\, in Texas and beyond\, is taking notice. \nThere’s magic in how they embrace the true roots of country music\, interpreting them in the modern context with such love and passion that makes the music feel more palpable and alive than with most other country bands.  You can tell right away this is a well-seasoned outfit that’s put in the time honing their craft in honky tonks across Texas\, perfectly illustrating the beauty of the music to the audience in a way that feels vital. The Broken Spokes are the textbook definition of what country music is in its purest form.

SUMMARY:STEARNS COUNTY PACHANGA SOCIETY & THE BROTHERS BURN MOUNTAIN
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps the most amazing thing about the music of the SCPS is that its appeal cuts through both generational and cultural barriers. A cross section of a typical crowd will find people ranging from their 20s to their 70s\, and in terms of culture you’ll find college students/professors from Minnesota and around the world\, long-term local residents\, members of the local Latino community\, and a sizable number of local musicians. The participatory nature of the Pachanga experience is a key part of the energy or synergy that is created between the audience and the players on the stage. A large number (20-50) of people regularly bring their own percussion instruments from home or play those provided by the group. More often than not\, if you’re not playing along with the music coming from the stage\, you’re out there dancing and contributing to the energy that way. Whatever the case\, nearly everyone (regardless of age\, sex\, color\, creed\, nationality\, sexual orientation\, and/or musical tastes) who experiences a Pachanga Society meeting comes away with a smile and a desire to shake their hips\, move their feet\, whoop it up\, and have a good time! \nBased out of Duluth\, MN\, The Brothers Burn Mountain are a soulful\, energetic\, eclectic duo of real-life brothers\, Ryan and Jesse Dermody. They’ve been playing music together everyday as a duo for more than 20 years. They’ve released 10 full-length albums of original music\, and have toured across the country over the years\, though especially in the Midwest\, having played more than 1\,850 live shows. Their sound is a roiling melting pot of so many musical influences\, that it’s hard to describe\, except as energetic and eclectic; with afro-cuban rhythms\, Zappa-esque spontanaeity\, grittiness\, bluesyness\, tenderness\, and a singer-songwriter\, folky flair.
