Born in the Dutch Sinti community\, he learned to play the guitar at an early age. SUMMARY:Poetry Reading with Freeman Ng\, Dralanda Larkins\, and Janna Knittel
DESCRIPTION:The Atwood Library on the St. Cloud State University campus is hosting a poetry reading. The following poets will take part: \nFreeman Ng is the author of Bridge Across the Sky\, a YA novel-in-verse based on the Chinese immigration experience through Angel Island in the early 1900s (Atheneum Books for\nYoung Readers\, 2024); Basho’s Haiku Journeys\, a haiku picture book (Stone Bridge Press\, 2021); The House We Sheltered In and The Masks We Wore\, a pandemic picture book; Haiku Diem\, a daily haiku feed; and Trumpbert\, a political webcomic. He’s also the editor and illustrator of The Shape a Wing Makes\, selected poems of Fran Claggett Holland paired with Freeman’s digital art\, and the co-author\, with Peter Dale Scott\, of Poetry And Terror: Politics and Poetics in Coming To Jakarta\, a discussion of Scott’s seminal book-length poem that combined autobiography with an exposé of the 1965 Indonesian Massacre (Bloomsbury USA\, 2019). Ripples\, a picture book about gravitational waves and friendship written by Freeman and illustrated by Daniel Miyares\, is forthcoming from Neal Porter Books in fall 2027. \nDralandra Larkins is an award-winning spoken-word poet\, multi-genre writer\, and audiobook author of Before I Lie (2025). A COMPAS teaching artist\, she is a recipient of the Loft Literary Center’s Teaching Artist Fellowship\, the Minnesota State Arts Board Grant\, and Springboard for the Arts’ Weathering Together artist grant. She has performed for the NAACP\, Button Poetry\, MN State Capitol\, Mill City Museum\, MN Black Business Ball and the MN Black Authors Expo. Her work weaves together rhythm\, intimacy\, and vulnerability to create a haven for healing rooted in her background as a social worker. She is the co-editor of Cracked Walnut’s anthology\, Rewilding Hope (2023)\, and The Nations Underground: Writing with Our Ancestors with Cabello-Hansel (2024) and currently coordinates literary programming at Friends of the St. Paul Public Library including Club Book\, Moving Words\, and the Fireside Reading Series. Follow her journey: dralandrawrites.com. \nJanna Knittel is the author of Real Work (Nodin\, 2022)\, a finalist for the 2023 Minnesota Book Award in poetry\, and the chapbook Fish & Wild Life (Finishing Line\, 2018). In addition to several journals\, Janna has also published poems in the following anthologies: Blue\, A Humana Obscura Anthology (2025); The Experiment Will Not Be Bound (Unbound Edition\, 2023); Broad Wings\, Long Legs: A Rookery of Heron Poems (North Star\, 2024); and Waters Deep: A Great Lakes Anthology (Split Rock\, 2018). Janna’s second full-length book in-progress is tentatively titled The Last Cormorant. \n  \nThe event includes a Q&A with the poets. DESCRIPTION:Bundle up to walk\, snowshoe\, or ski and let the glow of candlelight guide you through towering pines of Itasca State Park under a starry night sky. The lantern-lit trail will begin and end at the Forest Inn. Warm up by a campfire placed at the mid-point of the trail before heading back to the Forest Inn\, where we invite you to gather outside on the heated patio or inside to enjoy live music. Check back here for more trail details closer to the event. \nRENTALS … When snow conditions allow\, skis and snowshoes can be rented from Itasca Sports. Adult and youth sizes available. Located inside the Forest Inn. Visit www.itascasports.com for more information. \nA Minnesota state parks vehicle permit is required on all vehicles in the park. A Minnesota Ski Pass is required for all skiers over 16 years old. Purchase permits and passes at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center during business hours or purchase them online in advance. Pets are not allowed on groomed ski trails or inside park buildings.

This event is held outside\, so dress for winter weather. Extreme cold or unsafe weather may lead to the cancelation of this event. \nThe event is free to attend\, but a vehicle permit is required for all motor vehicles entering the park.

DESCRIPTION:Fort Ridgely will hold its annual Candlelight Hike on January 31\, 2026. \nAs conditions allow\, two looped trails will be open – one hilly and 1 mile in length\, the second flatter and .75 mile in length. \nSnowshoers and skiers are welcome to bring their own equipment. Hot cocoa will be available at the chalet. The main trails start at the chalet\, but if parking fills up there please park at the picnic area. \nIf wind chills are forecasted at -15 degrees or below\, or if trail conditions are too icy\, the hike will be canceled.

Free-will donations go to support the Friends of Camden group. \nDressing in layers and sturdy boots is recommended. If snow conditions allow\, bring your snowshoes. A limited number of snowshoes will be available for rent at the park office. \nEvent will begin at the Beach Parking Lot. Park Staff will be present to direct you.

SUMMARY:Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Candlelight Hike: Candlelight Hike & Ski at Frontenac State Park
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy an evening in the park by candlelight! Snowshoe\, ski\, or hike the trail along the bluff top with beautiful views of the Mississippi River Valley\, lit by dozens of luminaries and the light of the full moon. Warm up at campfires at either end of the trail or enjoy some light refreshments by the wood stove in the warming shelter. \nRefreshments provided by the Frontenac State Park Association volunteer group. \nVehicles entering the park are required to have a State Park vehicle permit. Skiers 16 and older will need a MN Ski Pass to participate. Ski passes are $10 for a day pass\, $25 for the year\, or $70 for three years. A limited number of snowshoes will also be available for rent for $6 per pair.
