SUMMARY:The Lowest Pair @ Milk & Honey Ciders
DESCRIPTION:During the spring and summer of 2020\, The Lowest Pair (Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee) found themselves camping and sharing songs around the fire with two dear friends and incredible musicians Adam Roszkiewicz and Leif Karlstrom of the instrumental duo Small Town Therapy. Founding members of the progressive string band Front Country\, multi-instrumentalists Adam and Leif bring a new dynamic palette of colors to Kendl and Palmer’s own instrumental prowess and expressive lyricism. \nAfter sharing a handful of new songs and tunes\, (and making immediate fans in the campground) there was no doubt that a record was in the future\, and In August of 2020 they spent a week out in Enterprise\, Oregon recording at the OK Theater. \nThe new record “Horse Camp” leans towards each member’s string band roots and showcases brand new Lowest Pair songs Kendl and Palmer wrote during the strange times of the pandemic. The album also includes an instrumental by each musician involved. It’s an awesome display of how a simple collaboration of friends can result in music that is as organic as it is undeniable.

SUMMARY:BAD BAD HATS @ Milk & Honey Ciders
DESCRIPTION:Bad Bad Hats are an indie rock trio from Minneapolis\, Minnesota. Known for bringing a joyful\, exuberant presence to their live shows\, touring with The Beths\, Margaret Glaspy\, The Front Bottoms\, Hippo Campus\, and Third Eye Blind\, the group took specific care to bring their fun-loving spirit to their third LP\, Walkman. \nKerry (guitar/vocals)\, Chris (bass)\, and Con (drums) let their collective hair down on Walkman\, bringing raucous and explosive riffs alongside witty lyrics. Though you might not notice from their indie rock exterior\, Bad Bad Hats draws a heavy influence from classic pop songwriting that shines through in their hooky choruses and strong melodic sensibilities. \nFor this release the band set out to push their capabilities as a trio. Subtle changes in process helped the band achieve this goal\, such as shifting Chris from a wider multi-instrumental role to allow him to prioritize his bass playing\, having Kerry record the bulk of the guitars instead. “You can hear all of our musical voices a lot better on this record.” \nA carefully crafted studio sound brings the record to life\, injecting it with an energetic voice that is unique to Bad Bad Hats. Walkman is the group’s fourth time working with producer Brett Bullion\, including their previous two LPs\, Psychic Reader and Lightning Round\, and the Wide Right EP.  Bullion and the band use the studio as an instrument\, resulting in their most polished work to date.

SUMMARY:PERT NEAR SANDSTONE & ERIK KOSKINEN @ Milk & Honey Ciders
DESCRIPTION:This Minneapolis/St. Paul band was founded by four childhood friends\, who play with infectious energy and an undeniable joy that cuts straight to the heart. Crossing Old-time instrumentation with contemporary sensibilities\, the Pert Near Sandstone first emerged in 2007 with their acclaimed debut\, ‘Up And Down The River.’ Over the course of five more studio albums and several live releases\, they established themselves as standard-bearers for the versatility and vitality of the Midwestern roots music scene\, performing onstage with the likes of Steve Martin and the Flaming Lips and earning dates along the way with everyone from Trampled By Turtles and Del McCoury to Yonder Mountain String Band and Sam Bush. \nNPR’s Mountain Stage hailed the band for putting a “Midwestern stamp on Appalachian [sounds]\,” while A Prairie Home Companion described them as “a force on the Minnesota roots music scene and beyond\,” and The Current praised their live performances as “a frenzied string shredding spree that takes audiences under its spell.” Festival favorites in both the US and Europe\, the band launched their own gathering\, the Blue Ox Music Festival\, in 2015\, hosting Bela Fleck\, Tyler Childers\, Jerry Douglas\, Margo Price\, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, The Infamous Stringdusters\, Greensky Bluegrass\, Shovels & Rope\, Justin Townes Earle\, and many more in Eau Claire\, WI. \nErik Koskinen is an American singer-songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist and producer\, whose music is not categorized by sub-genres. Stylistically he is on his own. Heavily influenced by American roots music\, the rhythmic integrity and musical tone is as important as the lyrical content and the artistic intent. Koskinen has reverently entered the anthology of uniquely crafted wry songs with the likes of Woody Guthrie and Ry Cooder while speaking as plainly as your neighbor. The Minneapolis Star Tribune calls Koskinen “the real deal” and “The Best country songwriter in Minnesota”

SUMMARY:MICHAEL SHYNES & MATHEW FOWLER @ Milk & Honey Ciders
DESCRIPTION:Join us for summer night of acoustic music at the Milk and Honey bandshell. We welcome Minnesota’s own Michael Shynes and Colorado singer/songwriter Mathew Fowler for a double bill. \nMichael Shynes flies with inspired musical creativity and reaches the sort of heights we aren’t accustomed to hearing performers match so early in their careers. Shynes’ dedication has paid off and he’s well on his way to embodying his every musical ambition. His vocal abilities occupy a lofty position indie music will simply never be able to contain. We are privileged to witness his ascent and\, if he continues writing and recording songs this good\, his skyward climb will be swift. \nDocumenting all the joy and wonder and heartbreak and confusion of life in your early 20s\, Matthew Fowler’s stunning label debut\, The Grief We Gave Our Mother\, is a profoundly personal work of self-discovery and introspection\, but more than that\, it’s an ode to growing up and chasing dreams. The songs here wrestle with love and loss in the face of ambition and independence\, and the arrangements are captivatingly complex to match\, layering dynamic guitars\, breathy woodwinds\, and lush harmonies into a transcendent soundscape that blurs the lines between traditional roots music and experimental chamber folk. The result is a record that’s at once bold and timid\, hopeful and anxious\, world-weary and naïve\, an honest\, revelatory collection all about forging a life of purpose\, passion\, and meaning. \nBorn and raised in Florida\, Fowler fell in love with music at an early age\, and by 19\, he’d already self-released his debut and begun booking his own cross-country tours. Critics were quick to take notice\, with American Songwriter praising Fowler’s “earnest\, strummy songcraft” and The Bluegrass Situation proclaiming that his “assured\, velvety vocals are rivaled only by the intimacy of his lyrics.” In addition to helping Fowler land support slots with everyone from Richard Thompson and Damien Jurado to Angel Olsen and The Weepies\, the music also caught the ear of acclaimed producer Shane Leonard\, who invited Fowler to Eau Claire\, WI\, to complete work on The Grief We Gave Our Mother in 2020.
