Archived: Sheriff’s Office Warns Of Telephone Scam During Tax Season
It is that time of the year to file tax forms and people should be careful about telephone scams.
Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner reminds people to remain vigilant about the phone calls they receive from strangers. The caller might tell people that they owe taxes and they will be arrested if they fail to call back the person.
Sanner adds the Internal Revenue Service does not contact people to demand payment without notice. IRS also doesn’t threaten individuals without any opportunity for appeal.
Those who receive such calls should report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.
