FREE RADIO TRAINING

KVSC offers free training to students and community members interested in getting their voice heard on an independent, public radio station. We have volunteer opportunities to be an on air music announcer/deejay, newscaster or sportscaster.

ANNOUNCER/DEEJAY

KVSC has opportunities for any music lover with an open mind. KVSC’s music format includes alternative/progressive rock, punk, folk, jazz, blues, hip hop, world, local music, electronica, reggae, classic rock, and much more. Check out some of our playlists online. We do not play Top 40, mainstream country, overplayed classic rock, or anything with offensive content. You don’t need to be a musical genius to get on the air; you just need to keep an open mind!

NEWSCASTER

KVSC broadcasts news eight times a day, with a one-hour program at noon and a 20-30 minute program at 4pm. Join our news team in presenting local stories written by our own staff, as well as national and international headlines from the Associated Press, BBC, and other independent sources. This is a great opportunity for people interested in broadcasting.

SPORTSCASTER/PLAY-BY-PLAY

KVSC covers a variety of Men’s and Women’s Husky Sports, including football, volleyball, baseball, softball, hockey, and basketball. Join our sports team and learn how to technically produce a game and even present play-by-play in some events. This is a great opportunity for people interested in sports broadcasting. KVSC also features a weekly sports magazine every Friday.

The training procedures generally follow this timeline:

  1. Come down to the station for a tour of our state of the art broadcast facilities.
  2. Complete two demo tapes, including a mock newscast and mock music broadcast.
  3. Complete several sit-ins where you will get one-on-one training with a live deejay.
  4. Lastly, complete an extensive test of your knowledge of KVSC and FCC rules and regulations.

People with prior radio experience will likely have the amount of training required reduced based on their abilities. The training period takes as long or short as you want it to. The more time you can dedicate to training, the sooner you will complete it.

Get started today! Call (320) 308-4747 or email us with your name and current contact information (email and telephone number). You can also stop by the basement of Stewart Hall at St Cloud State University (Room 27). Our Training Director Dan Debaun will have you fill out an application to get your started on the training process.

KVSC: Possibly the best thing that will ever happen to you.
