For all of the ice fishers and skaters, the DNR reminds that Minnesota temperatures have not been cold enough for safe ice conditions.

The Department of Natural Resources warns outdoor enthusiasts to stay off the lakes until at least 4 inches of new, clear ice is noticeable. An even thicker layer of ice coverage is necessary for snowmobile use.

Last winter, five people died from falling through thin ice. No deaths have been reported so far this year; however, several emergency ice rescues have already taken place, according to the DNR. Conservation Officer Lieutenant Adam Block says “No fish is worth the risk of going through thin ice.”

Lake George has not yet opened this winter for ice skating. Until then, the City of St. Cloud says no one is allowed on the lake until it is declared safe by the Park and Recreation director.
