The Benton County Sheriff’s Office reminds people to ignore calls from people claiming to be from Internal Revenue Service or sheriff’s office.

Sheriff Troy Heck says deputies received a complaint from a victim of a telephone scam. The caller tried to persuade the victim there was a warrant out for their arrest and a payment was needed to close the case.

Heck says scam callers use the non-emergency numbers of the sheriff’s office. Deputies do not call about arrest warrants or ask for money over the phone with credit or pre-paid bank cards for bail payments. The IRS also will not call people asking for payments on the phone.

The sheriff’s office reminds folks to avoid giving personal information to anyone over the phone and hang up if the caller claims to be from the IRS or sheriff’s office. To help verify the legitimacy of a request, ask for a call back number.
