Archived: 17-Year-Old Pleads Guilty in Death of Davee Devose, Faces Deportation

Muhiyadin Mohamed Hassan pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in a Stearns County courtroom Friday. Hassan was 16-years-old at the time of the assault that killed 20-year-old Davee Devose on June 26. Hassan turned 17 earlier this month.

Chief Deputy Attorney Matthew Quinn says Hassan admitted to stabbing Devose in the chest during a fight. Judge John Scherer sentenced him as a juvenile to the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Red Wing, and Hassan will be on juvenile probation until he is 21 years old. The judge handed down an adult criminal sentence of 150 months in prison to Hassan, but stayed that sentence on the condition he not violate his probation or commit any new offenses.

The attorney’s office also believes Hassan is not a U.S. citizen and he will be deported to his country of origin.

According to St. Cloud police, on June 26 Hassan was walking with three friends at the intersection of 6th Avenue South and 5th Street South at 1:40 a.m. A fight broke out and Hassan stabbed Devose in the chest, who died at the scene.

The county appealed to the state to try Hassan as an adult, but there was not sufficient evidence to certify him for prosecution as an adult.
