Bicyclists will be flooding the highways this week on a central Minnesota tour through Little Falls, Brainerd and Pine River.

The Bicycling Around Minnesota event takes place Thursday to Sunday. Bikers will cover a total of 275 miles on highways, local routes and bicycle paths.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds drivers to share roadways and follow all traffic safety laws.

Here is a list of MnDOT’s “rules of the road” to keep bikers and drivers safe:

• Drivers should be on the lookout and watch for and yield to bicyclists before turning.
• Bicyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.
• Drivers must maintain a three-foot clearance at all times when passing a biker.
• Bicyclists and drivers must obey all traffic control signs and signals, and yield the right of way to each other.
• Bicyclists should communicate their intent by yielding to traffic and signaling before turning or changing lanes.
• Bicyclists should wear bright colors and reflective gear, use head and tail lights and always wear a helmet.
• Drivers should stay alert and avoid distracted driving.
