Drivers in the State of Minnesota will face a higher fine if texting while driving starting Saturday.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says drivers who text and drive will be fined $225 after violating the law for more than one time. People should also be aware that they would still have to pay another $50 in addition to the new amount passed by the law.

The number of citation for texting while driving has risen from almost 850 in 2010 to 3200 in 2014. Representative Frank Hornstein, one of the authors of the law, says the spike in the number of related accidents and the stories of those impacted by distractive driving cannot be ignored.

Driving without attention to the road was number one factor in multiple-vehicle accidents in 2014. Drivers are encouraged to make the right decision by putting their phones away or even turning them off.
