Archived: Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Issues Warning Of Phone Fraud
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning of fraudulent activity after receiving two calls from people just north of Sartell.
Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner says people have been receiving phone calls from someone claiming to be a Microsoft employee stating that their computer has been infected with a virus. The company would then ask the victim for remote access to their computers to look through their files.
The company would then offer several security programs to purchase for protection and charged the victims $150. In both cases the credit card company said the reported activity was fraudulent.
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public to stay on the lookout for any similar issues and to avoid giving personal information over the phone as well as remote access to their computers.
