Archived: St. Cloud Police Department Warns of IRS Phone Scam

The St. Cloud Police Department has issued an alert, warning citizens of a phone scam from a person claiming to be from the IRS.

Lieutenant Jeff Oxton says there were several reports from people who said they received a phone call from a member of the IRS who demanded they owed money. The fictitious IRS representative tells individual receiving the call they must immediately pay by obtaining a pre-paid debit card.

In some cases the victims were told they had to stay on the line until a bank transfer was completed.

The St. Cloud Police Department has been in contact with local IRS officials and they say the scam is a nationwide problem. The IRS warns that they don’t ask for these types of transfers and residents should be cautious of giving personal information over the phone.

Anyone receiving these calls can visit the Treasury Department to file a complaint or the St. Cloud IRS office, located at 1010 West St. Germain Street.
