The Benton County Sheriff’s office received a call Thursday evening from a man saying he was going to fire shots at a storage facility in the St. Cloud area.

Benton County Chief Deputy Troy Heck says the man hung up on the dispatcher before any exact location was mentioned. After several law enforcement agencies began searching St. Cloud area storage facilities, a Benton County Deputy found a man in a chair at Airway Storage in Minden Township.

After the deputy made contact with man, the suspect showed a handgun and fired it at the deputy. The deputy returned fire and stopped to cover.

Heck adds the suspect later left the facility in a vehicle which was located shortly after near the intersection of 29th Avenue SE and 3rd Street SE. Officers from several jurisdictions established a perimeter around the area.

At 8:40 p.m., 43-year-old Christopher Knyphausen of Litchfield, was found in a nearby wooded area and taken into custody without incident.

Knyphausen is currently being held in Benton County jail and is facing charges of 2nd Degree assault.

Nobody was hurt in the incident.

As of August 1, the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the criminal investigation of the shooting incident at the request of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy involved, Deputy Steven Reese has been with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office for 6 months. Reese has been placed on standard paid administrative leave while this incident is being investigated.

Benton County Chief Deputy Troy Heck says Knyphausen is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday.
