Adopt a Highway volunteer efforts save Minnesota $6 million dollars by keeping state highways clean of litter.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says volunteers from the Adopt a Highway program pick up more than 826,000 pounds of trash along 11,000 miles of roadways.

Adopt a Highway Program Administrator Ernest Lloyd says,“Because of volunteers’ contributions, our crews can spend more time on highway improvement and safety projects.”

Adopt a Highway is represented by 49,000 volunteers. Each group of volunteers is responsible for cleaning a two mile stretch of highway.
