Archived: Fire Destroys Roosevelt Early Childhood Center

St. Cloud, Minn. (AP)–Crews are tearing down what’s left of a St. Cloud school that sustained heavy damage in a fire that officials say may have been started by lighting.

St. Cloud Fire Chief Bill Mund says tearing down the Roosevelt Early Childhood Center is the only way to get at all of the fire. Otherwise, he says it would just keep smoldering.

The cause is under investigation. Mund says neighbors reported a "loud bang" that might have been a lightning strike, but he says it’s still too early to confirm that as the cause.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which was reported just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Stearns County authorities say lighting is suspected as the cause of a house fire in St. Joseph and a barn fire near Eden Valley.
