Archived: SCSU Economists Release Study On Foreign-Born St. Cloud Residents
St. Cloud State University’s School of Public Affairs Research Institute released research last week on foreign-born St. Cloud residents.
According to the report, titled “St. Cloud Immigration: A fact sheet,” 4,484 people living in St. Cloud are foreign born, which makes up 6.8 percent of St. Cloud’s total population.
The study was conducted by School of Public Affairs Research Institute director and SCSU Economics Professor King Banaian as well as assistant SCSU Economics Professor Monica Garcia-Perez.
Banaian and Garcia-Perez looked at 2012 U.S. Census data focusing on immigration from Eastern-African countries like Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
Of the nearly 4,500 foreign-born St. Cloud residents, 195 of those are from Ethiopia, 469 from were born in Kenya and 888 people from other eastern African countries like Somalia.
Banaian says he’s heard claims of 10,000-plus Somalian immigrants in the St. Cloud area but he says the data doesn’t support that claim.
