After last week’s storms, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office is asking boaters to be safe while water levels are higher than normal.

Sheriff Troy Heck says the July 11 storms dumped large amounts of water into area lakes and rivers, causing some to reach near flood stage.

Officials are asking boaters to stay as far away as possible from shorelines and drive at no-wake speeds. Wake from a watercraft may cause erosion along shore.

Swift currents are another concern after the heavy rains, and boaters and swimmers are reminded to use caution when there’s fast moving water.

As precautionary measures, life jackets or other flotation devices are recommended. People using Minnesota’s lakes and rivers are urged to make good, careful decisions for their personal safety and the safety of others.

The Mississippi River, which is at a higher water level than normal, is expected to recede by Friday.
