Homes were evacuated and several people are hospitalized after a tanker leaked anhydrous ammonia in Eden Valley Monday night.

Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner says deputies received a call at 7 p.m. about a tanker leaking ammonia on County Road 180 north of St. Eden Lake Township. Their investigation shows a broken seal caused a 6,000 pound tank to leak.

The leaked gas didn’t spread around the area as the weather was not windy at the time of the incident. Many people, including a deputy from Stearns County, were exposed to the gas. They were taken to the St. Cloud Hospital for treatment.

The Eden Valley Fire Department controlled the leak and contained the released gas. Paynesville Ambulance and the Minnesota State Patrol assisted Stearns County officials at the scene.
