The Queer’s Guide to Country Music

For a queer kid from the South, country music can be a contentious thing—you love it and hate it. You learn from it yet resent it. It is family and tradition and all the complicated feelings that come with. Country music is home.
This is a one person show created and performed by Dr. Colin Whitworth, a visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Communication.The Queer’s Guide to Country Music wrestles with the history of the genre to ask what it means, how it’s understood, and who is left behind by popular conceptions of country music history. Conversation with Dr. Whitworth will follow the performance.
The performance is Tuesday, March 15 at the Arena Stage of the Performing Arts Center starting at 7:30 p.m,. It’s free and open to the public.
