Following the police shooting in Dallas, Texas, Minn. Gov. Mark Dayton released a statement mourning with family and friends Friday.

The Associated Press reports five Dallas police were killed during a protest a few blocks from Dealey Plaza, the landmark made famous by President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. The protest was in response to the deaths of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in suburban St. Paul. Shots were fired just before 9 a.m. Thursday.

Dayton issued his response Friday before 8 a.m.

“The terrible acts of murder in Dallas have shocked and horrified the nation,” Dayton said. “Today, our hearts also go out to the many, many law enforcement officers who faithfully serve our communities, and risk their lives every day and night to protect and serve the people of Minnesota and the nation.”

Dayton is urging people everywhere to care for one another, understand and build stronger communities.
