Snowmobile trails in Minnesota are set to open Tuesday.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says several conditions must be met before trails are ready for use. About 12 inches of snowfall is recommended to allow for packing and grooming of trails before riders take out their sleds.

The DNR encourages trail users to use caution during the early season. Trails may not be in the best condition if there are fallen trees, unfrozen areas with rocks and unopened gates.

Snowmobiles can be registered at any deputy registrar of motor vehicle or at the DNR License Bureau.

More than 22,000 miles of trails cover the state with about 21,000 maintained by local snowmobile club volunteers. Clubs in Stearns County include St. Stephen River Runners and Central Lake Snowmobile Club among others.
