Archived: SCSU Will Eliminate Six Sports Programs At The End Of 2015-16 Academic Year As A Cost Saving Action

St. Cloud State University President Earl Potter announced that six athletic programs will be eliminated at the end of the 2015-16 academic year.

The action was taken as cost saving measure and to provide a more sustainable student experience.

The university will eliminate men’s & women’s tennis, women’s nordic skiing, men’s cross country and men’s indoor/outdoor track and field.

President Potter adds the university is taking all necessary cost-saving action to avoid layoffs and minimize the number and impact where layoffs may be necessary.

Fiscal year 2017 has a goal to rebuild the university’s financial reserves by three million dollars, and reduce costs to shrink the six million dollar budget deficit. The most recent cost-saving action is removing six Husky athletic programs.

Assistant News Director Korina Borash has more details from Wednesday morning’s press conference in this AUDIO STORY.
