The second swim quarry at Stearns County’s Quarry Park and Nature Preserve opened Tuesday.

County Park Director, Peter Theismann, says the new quarry is smaller and its 45-foot depth is shallower than Melrose Deep 7, which is 100 feet. It features a quieter family-oriented setting, a sandy beach and a gradual slope leading to the water.

Theismann adds there will be no lifeguards in the quarry, so people still need to be good swimmers. The area also has several picnic tables, shelter, grills, a swimming dock and an outhouse. The cost of project was $151,500.

Bernick’s donated $15,500 to the project and Department of Natural Resources gave a $136,000 Legacy amendment grant for the project.
