Archived: St. Cloud Bridge Was Temporarily Closed After Multi-Vehicle Accident

A series of 10 vehicle accidents closed the Highway 23 Bridge in St. Cloud Tuesday morning.

St. Cloud Police Lieutenant Jeff Oxton says officers responded to a multiple car accident near the center of Granite City Crossing Bridge at 6:53 a.m.

Their investigation shows 25-year-old Alberto Zamora of St. Cloud was driving a pickup heading westbound across the bridge and lost the control of his vehicle, crossed the median and hit a sedan driven by 55-year-old Lynn Marie Kampa of St. Cloud. Both were taken to St. Cloud Hospital.

Two other vehicles traveling eastbound struck each other as a result of the first accident. One of the drivers, 24-year-old Kelli Ann Mrozek of Waite Park, received serious injuries and was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital.

Oxton says another six other cars were involved in separate accidents due to the initial crash on the bridge. No injuries were reported in any of the other accidents. He adds the road conditions were very slippery at the time.

Oxton says Zamora was cited under a state law which requires every driver to be responsible and aware of the actual and potential hazards then existing on the highway and must use due care in operating a vehicle.

The Metro Bus had a bus on site to provide a warm place for people involved in the accidents during the hour-long investigation and clean up.
