St. Cloud Fire Department Gives Helpful Tips For Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisioning
By: Nyah Adams / News Director
With the winter season in full swing, the St. Cloud Fire Department would like to remind us of useful steps we can take to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning in our homes.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that is produced by burning fuel. This means if you have any wood or gas fired appliances such as ovens, water heaters, fireplaces or attached garages you should have a carbon monoxide detector nearby.
A good indicator of CO poisoning is if multiple people in the home experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness and a loss of consciousness. If untreated these symptoms could lead to death.
If these symptoms occur, immediately exit the building and call 9-1-1.
Carbon monoxide detectors are always readily available at your local hardware store and operate like smoke alarms. If your detector is over 5-years old the sensor may be degrading, making it crucial that you buy a new one.
