Spring is a time for students get their bikes outside after the chilly winter months. St. Cloud State University’s Public Safety Department provides riders with tips on how to keep bikes safe:

First, students are encouraged to use a "U" shaped lock to reduce chances of theft. If a chain is used it should be at least 3 feet 8 inches long. If a cable is used it should be half an inch in diameter.

Also, securing bikes to anything other than bike racks is prohibited. Riders should not lock their bikes to fences, stair rails or any other fixed objects. Choosing a well-lit, populated area and not leaving your bike outside long periods of time will also reduce chances of theft.

Finally, keeping a record of your bike’s description, including serial number, increases the chance of recovering it.
