A beloved St. Cloud State University professor who’s influenced students for the past 25 years passed away this week.

Bruce Hyde was surrounded by his family when he died of throat cancer Tuesday at Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Cloud.

Dr. Hyde taught in the Department of Communication Studies from 1990 until his retirement last spring.

Professor Jeff Bineham, who worked closely with Hyde, says, “Bruce was a loved and respected colleague, an innovative thinker, and an exceptional teacher… We will miss him deeply, and his influence will live on in the many lives he touched.”

Also known for his acting work, Hyde will be remembered as playing Lieutenant Kevin Riley in the original "Star Trek" series.

Dr. Hyde is survived by his wife, two step-children and granddaughter. He was 74.
