Archived: St. John’s Abbey Bauhaus Architecture Subject of Historical Talk
An Art History professor from the University of St. Thomas will present “Saint John’s Abbey Church” at the Stearns History Museum next week.
The Benedictine Abbey of St. John in Collegeville decided to expand their campus in the 1950s. The Benedictines chose a former member of the Bauhaus, Marcel Breuer, to design the church. The project made the Benedictines leaders of church reform and confirmed Breuer as one of the most innovative architects of the time.
Professor Victoria Young, who is presenting at the event says the architect designed a work that set a worldwide standard for religious design.
The program will be part of the Breakfast Club in the Stearns History Museum at 9 a.m. Wednesday, November 11th. The event is free for museum members and $7 for the public.
