Archived: Stearns County Will Add Metal Detectors And Security Guards To Office Buildings After Public Attacks
Stearns County is adding extra security enforcements to its administration and service centers after recent attacks in public places.
Metal detectors will be installed in both buildings and two officers will be hired for security screenings, an action approved by the board of commissioners. The measure was passed after a 3-2 vote Wednesday. Commissioners Jeff Mergen and Mark Bromenschenkel voted against the extra staffing until a staffing study was done on the sheriff’s office.
The county says planning began months ago. Recently, there have been two reported security breaches at the county offices with people carrying weapons. Both times a suspect was arrested.
More than 570 calls were made to the sheriff’s office in 2015 in which county employees needed assistance. On average, 800 people walk into the administration center each day and 700 into the service center.
Lt. Robert Dickhaus says, “We want to make it safer for employees as well as visitors who come to our buildings to conduct county business.”
