Archived: UPDATE: St. Cloud Fugitive Arrested After Tuesday Standoff

No one was injured after a standoff early Tuesday evening on 3rd Street and 23rd Avenue North in St. Cloud. Police pulled over a vehicle around 4:20 p.m. to assist the Minnesota Department of Corrections Fugitive Task Force in arresting a felony fugitive.

St. Cloud Police Sergeant Jason Burke says the suspect refused to cooperate and barricaded himself in his vehicle. At the time police secured the area and closed down roads. Negotiators talked the suspect into surrendering peacefully. A woman in the vehicle was released at the scene.

The standoff ended at around 7:30 p.m. with the arrest of 26 year old Juanel Anthony Mikulak.

The St. Cloud Police Department was assisted by Waite Park Police, Stearns County and Benton County Sheriff Departments.

According to the Sarah Latuseck of the Department of Corrections, Mikulak was released from the Moose Lake Correction Facility back in October of 2013. Latuseck says Minnesota offenders serve two thirds of their sentence in prison and the remaining one third of their sentence in the community under the supervised release.

Mikulak was considered a felony fugitive because of violating terms of his supervised release. Latuseck says his specific violation won’t be made available until Mikulak’s DOC hearing. Examples of conditions offenders must follow to avoid a violation of their release are; maintaining contact with their agent, residing at an approved residence and refrain from using drugs or alcohol.
