A popular Stearns County lake has a new creature living beneath its surface.

Zebra Mussels, an invasive species, have been spotted in Clearwater Lake. The European species came from the Great Lakes and can cause rapid changes to ecosystems. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the mussels were likely transferred by boats, docks or other water equipment.

To prevent the spread of Zebra Mussels and other invasive species always wash boats and other equipment with warm soap and water.
