The SCSU Men’s Hockey Team split this past weekend on the road against the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Friday night’s game was a tightly contested match-up that the Huskies prevailed over the Bulldogs by a score of 2-1. Both of St. Cloud State’s goals were scored by star defenseman Jack Achan with assists going to Robby Jackson and Blake Winiecki on the first goal and Jacob Benson and Mikey Eyssimont on the second.

Duluth forward Riley Tufte broke the shutout bid for St. Cloud goaltender Jeff Smith at the 13:30 mark of the 3rd period the cut St. Cloud’s lead to 2-1. Rock solid goaltending from Smith propelled the Huskies to victory on Friday night. Smith made 41 saves on 42 shots.

Saturday night’s rematch would end with a different result as the Huskies fell by a score of 4-3 in overtime.

Duluth stormed of the gates and managed to garner a 3-0 on goals from Karson Kuhlman, Avery Peterson, and Dan Molenaar. However, the Huskies battled back and tied the game with three straight goals of their own coming from Blake Winiecki, Patrick Newell, and Jimmy Schuldt.

A scoreless third period would lead into overtime where Kyle Osterberg became the hero scoring just 2:33 into the overtime frame to give Minnesota-Duluth the 4-3 OT win.

The Huskies now have and NCHC record of 5-8-1 and an overall record of 10-11-1. They will resume action this Friday and Saturday against NCHC opponent Denver University.
