SCSU Men’s Basketball 2018-19 Preview

All eyes will be on the St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball team opening their 2018-19 season, as the preseason recognition. Before this season begins, the NSIC announced the Huskies as #1 in the NSIC North Preseason Coach’s Poll.

Last season, the Huskies had one of the most historic seasons in school history. Overall, the Huskies finished with a record of 24-9 and an impressive 17-5 NSIC record falling just behind Northern State in the NSIC North Division. It was the best record for the Huskies program since the 2009-10 season.

Matt Reimer enters his fifth year as head coach for the Huskies, leading SCSU to a NCAA Central Regional Tournament last year marking the strongest season in his coaching tenure leading St. Cloud State.

The Huskies senior forward Gage Davis for the second straight year was named NSIC North Pre-Season Player of the Year. Last season, Davis averaged 19.2 points and 7.8 rebounds for the Huskies. He earned First Team All-NSIC the last three seasons, as well as a 2018 Division 2 Bulletin Honorable Mention All-American Team award.

Key returners will be pivotal for the Huskies outside of the outstanding talent of Gage Davis. Senior guard Adam Heede-Anderson will lead the ball on offense after starting 31 of 33 games last year. Talented, big framed Sean Smith caused havoc around the glass last season for SCSU as Smith last season broke the single season record for blocks with 88 and lead the Huskies with 263 rebounds all last season.  Other players such senior Brindley Theisen, senior Jace Kitchen, and junior Trevon Marshall will play crucial roles for the Huskies all looking to meet the preseason expectation as favorites in the NSIC North.

St. Cloud State opens the 2018-19 season travelling to Mankato for the MIAA/NSIC Challenge facing Lindenwood University and Missouri Southern State University in a pair of non-conference games to open the season. After a meeting with division three foe Crown College (UMAC), a possible early game of the season candidate will be under the spotlight as the Huskies host Minnesota-State Mankato at Halenbeck Hall on November 16th.

The tilt with Mankato is the first NSIC opponent the Huskies will see this season. After a Thanksgiving tournament trip to California, NSIC opens for the Huskies hosting UMD on December 1st.
