Huskies Women’s Hoops Split Weekend Series

by Leif Ender / kvsc.org/sports

On Friday January 25th the Huskies looked to continue their home winning streak to 7-1 this week, but would take on a young Northern State team.

In the first quarter, it was the Huskies who came out with a fast pace, with a 7-2 run to start the quarter. The defense would be stifling as they held the Wolves to nine points, while causing multiple turnovers.

With those multiple turnovers, Northern State also committed at least 6 shot clock violations in the first quarter. St. Cloud would end the first quarter on a 15-9 run. At the end of the half, SCSU would lead by ten, 34-24, but the second half was a different story. Northern State came out firing on all cylinders, shooting 57% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc. Northern State fought back from being down from double digits and took their first lead midway through the third up 43-41.

But that would be the only lead Northern State would have as SCSU would fight back late in the third and regain the lead. The Huskies would finish off the fourth quarter with scoring 27 points to hold off the Wolves with a 76-64 win. Leading scorers for the Huskies were Sophomore Tori Wortz, who had a monster night with 25 points, 8-11 shooting from the field, and sinking 18 out of her 25 points from beyond the arc.

Also having a good game was Freshman Katrina Theis, who tallied 12 points along with 5 rebounds, and Red-shirt Senior Mallie Doucette scoring 12 points. On defensive side, Nikki Kilboten was a threat inside the paint with four blocks. Mackenzie Uter and Brehna Evans would also cause havoc causing three steals each. Next game for the Huskies is against 24th Ranked MSU Moorhead Dragons.

On Saturday, the Huskies welcomed the 24th ranked MSU Moorhead Dragons to town. It was an explosive first quarter as both teams were shooting over 50 percent from the field, along with scoring 20 points in the first quarter.

The second quarter would be the same results as both teams scored 19 points, but SCSU would outshoot the Dragons 53% to 33% from the field. At the half, the Huskies would have the 24th Ranked Dragons on their heels as they would be up by ten. In the second half the Dragons flexed their muscles and showed why they were the 24th ranked team in Division 2, as they outscored the Huskies 28-17 as well as catching fire from the perimeter.

The Dragons also were hurting St. Cloud with dribble penetration as they scored 28 points inside the paint. Doing most of the damage was Jacky Volkert and Kiley Borowicz, who combined for 51 points, and 8 made three pointers. The Huskies would claw their way back to cut the lead to four, but that would be the closest that they would get as MSU Moorhead didn’t spoil their chance when they had the lead. Moorhead would go on to win 82-75 and would give SCSU their second loss at home since December 1st to Minnesota Duluth.

Leading scorers for SCSU was Sophomore Nikki Kilboten, who scored 16 points, two shy of tying her career high 18 points, with shooting 8-12 from the field along with 5 rebounds. Next in line for for SCSU was Katrina Theis with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Tori Wortz added on 13 points along with 3 assists, and Mallie Doucette tallied thirteen points. SCSU’s record after this weekend’s home stand, 11-7 overall record and 8-6 conference record.

Next week the Women’s basketball team returns back home for another weekend series at Halenbeck Hall as they welcome Upper Iowa and Winona State. Both games can be heard on the KVSC Sports Stream, with Leif Ender, Sam Goetzinger and Nathan Daggett on the call. Game times are set for 5:30 PM on Friday and 3:30 PM on Saturday.
