1. When and why did you get involved with 88.1 FM

I started working at KVSC in January of 2021. By this point, I had been listening to the station for the better part of a decade (as I am a St. Cloud area native). I was approached by Sydney Terry (then-Music Director for Your Sound Alternative) in late 2020 to co-head the Music Department going into the Spring Semester. We had both previously made our acquaintance through a variety of local music programs such as the Wirth Center’s School of Rock program. Since then, I have continued to be active as a Music Director while also contributing to the Production Department and helping formulate our current Programming Schedule.

2. What show(s) do you currently host on KVSC?

I primarily host Classic Rock Part One and Soul Flight. I also have been known to hop on the occasional Indie Brunch, Alt-Shift, Diversions, Granite City Rock Cafe, Crispy Bacon New Music Showcase, or even Insomnia Heaven!

3. Please list some of the artists and musicians that you consider a must-play on your show(s).

I try to keep KVSC as eclectic as possible by limiting repeat-plays on my shows. I find it simultaneously makes each show have a different flavor and pushes me to dig deeper by playing artists that I otherwise would overlook. My most-played artist on KVSC is David Bowie – followed closely by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Steely Dan – which sounds about right, but I’m just as excited to give airplay to Hudson-Ford or Stackridge because they’re nothing better than sharing a great lost gem with fellow music lovers.

4. What music do you listen to when you’re not tuned into KVSC?

Not to be that guy, but…everything? I mean, when it’s been your job to listen to anything that gets sent your way for the better part of four years, it’s kinda hard to turn the faucet off. In terms of music that I don’t play on KVSC, however, I’d say my biggest unscratched itch is big band music. I just love the historical element of it – not to mention the incredible arrangements of the ’30s-’50s.

5. What is the most embarrassing (perhaps even shameful) music phase you have gone through?

I don’t know if I’ve been ashamed of any music phase I’ve gone through. The closest thing would be around 2013 when I got into contemporary Top 40 pop for the first time, but…Daft Punk? Lorde? Kendrick Lamar? There was some good stuff in that lineup. And the bad stuff just pushed me further towards stations like KVSC. It’s also worth mentioning I got into free jazz immediately after I dumped Top 40, and that was a really rough transition in retrospect. Apologies to my friends.

6. What are your hobbies and/or interests?

I love writing, teaching and performing music (as referenced earlier). Beyond that, I consider myself an amateur cinephile – I still believe in physical media and my bank account regrets it! And, when the weather is warmer in Minnesota, I do like to go biking with my favorite tunes going in my headphones!

7. When you are not at work or KVSC, where can you most likely be found?

I’m usually at home sleeping. They can’t drag me away from here!

8. What’s the most challenging part of being a radio DJ?

Keeping things fresh is always a persistent challenge. During my Soul Flight shows, for example, I have made a habit of centering my shows on some specific subject or theme – which really helps me from playing the same records again and again.

9. What would you like to be doing in five years?

Radio. Music. Breathing. Full stop.
