Hockey Sweeps UAF Over Weekend
The SCSU men’s hockey team swept the University of Alaska Fairbanks over the weekend but it didn’t come without some resistance from the Nanooks.
On Friday night UAF leaped out to an early lead scoring three goals in the first nine minutes. An overwhelming start for Alaska would be later countered late in the first period when Nick Poehling scored at the 14:18 marker to cut the deficit to two goals. The lone goal in the second period would come on a SCSU power play after a one-time slap shot from the point by Captain Jimmy Schuldt. Trailing by one goal in the third, Nick Poehling would find the back of the net once again to tie the game at 5:09 of the period. The go ahead and eventual game winning goal would come only minutes later when Jimmy Schuldt would score on the power play once again to give the Huskies a 4-3 lead. Robby Jackson would extend the lead to two for SCSU with a wrist shot from the top of the circle and the scoring would finally be capped off by an empty net goal by Jack Poehling with almost no time left on the clock.
Saturday’s game started with what seemed was a trend for the weekend. On the power play Jimmy Schuldt scored his fourth goal of the season to put SCSU up early. Alaska took their time and found a few opportunities throughout the first and second periods scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead into the third. In the third Robby Jackson and Jacob Benson would tie, and take the lead for the Huskies. Alaska would then even the score on the power play and regain the lead with just over three minutes left. Roughly a minute later Ryan Poehling would find the back of the net and force the game to overtime. Two minutes into OT jack and Nick Poehling broke into the Alaska zone on a 2-on-1, and scored after Jack fed Nick for the OT winner.
With the sweep SCSU improves to 3-0-0 on the season and will be at home next weekend hosting Boston College.
