Archived: Husky Baseball Sweeps UMary; Face Bemidji State On Wednesday
The St. Cloud State baseball team snuck away with a sweep against the University of Mary on Wednesday at Joe Faber Field.
Well I guess I shouldn’t say snuck away, at least not for the first game of the double-header. They Huskies would record 10 runs on 13 hits to get the win in game one. Garrett Harrison would allow just 6 hits in 7 innings as the Huskies made quick work of the Marauders.
It was the second game that was really interesting. St. Cloud’s Ryan Diers and UMary’s Austin Ell each had great starts on the mound allowing neither team to score in the first four innings of play. In the fifth inning the Marauders’ bats came alive and they scored three runs.
Zak Hoffman would blast a two-run homer in the 6th inning to get the Huskies on the board. However after that the Husky bats would again get quiet.
The Marauders would record an unearned run in the 8th inning to extend their lead to 4-2 heading into the final frame.
Two Husky batters would go down in the 9th inning before Michael Jurgella stepped up to the plate. He would battle with 2 strikes until breaking through with a triple to deep right field. The hit brought Brandon Arnold and Kyle Lieser home and tied the game at 4-4.
The Huskies managed to survive the top of the 10th frame allowing only one hit. Karl Sorenson got the offense going early in the 10th with a double. Sam Boisner was walked shortly thereafter. And then Reese Gregory, who was filling in at pitcher for the Huskies at the time, hit a walk off single to earn the team’s 35th victory of the 2015 season.
The Huskies are now 35-3 on the season (19-3 in NSIC) and will continue their home stand on Wednesday April 22nd against Bemidji State University. First pitch from Joe Faber Field is set for 1:30pm and 4:30pm.
