Men’s Hockey Lead NCHC After UND Series
The SCSU men’s hockey team went 1-0-1 this past weekend at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center against the University of North Dakota.
On Friday Easton Brodzinski opened the scoring in the second before the Hawks would answer back to make it a tie game heading into the third period. Six minutes in Ryan Poehling intercepted a pass in his own zone and skated in on a breakaway to score beating Cam Johnson on the backhand.
North Dakota’s Cole Smith would answer three minutes leader to even up the score at 2-2 and force overtime.
The game would exceed the 5×5 and 3×3 overtime period and be sent to a sudden death shootout where Christian Wolanin would win the game for UND. The shootout win gave North Dakota an extra point in the NCHC standings.
On Saturday SCSU cleaned up their play and were able to dominate in the second period scoring three times. Mikey Eyssimont tallied two goals on the same shift with the second coming on the power play after SCSU went 0 for 6 on special teams the night before.The Huskies closed Saturday out with a 3-1 win to push them to the top of the NCHC.
Heading into the break SCSU holds a record of 12-2-1 and lead the conference. The Huskies return to action on January 29 when they travel to face Princeton.
