The SCSU Men’s Hockey team split this past weekend with then now ranked #3 team in the nation, Denver University.

Friday the Huskies got to work early when Robby Jackson scored on the power-play just 51 seconds in to the contest. Freshman Defenseman and NCHC Rookie and Defenseman of the week Jack Achan and Mikey Eyssimont had assists on the play. Denver scored in the opening two minutes of the first and second periods to take the 2-1 lead. However, in the dying seconds of the second period Blake Winiecki and Jack Poehling went down on a 2-on-1 that ended with Poehling scoring through the 5-hole of Denver goaltender Tanner Jaillet; tying the game at 2-2.

Denver and St. Cloud battled hard through a scoreless third period. Half way through the overtime period Mikey Eyssimont obtained the puck off of a broken play and threw it on goal where Ryan Poehling deflected it enough for it to slide low blocker side past Denver back-up goaltender Evan Cowley to give St. Cloud the 3-2 OT victory.

Saturday night the Huskies got off to another lead, but fell the Pioneers by a final score of 3-1 leading to a split of the weekend series.

The Huskies are back in action this Friday afternoon to face-off against the Bemidji State Beavers in the North Star College Cup. Puck drop is set for 4:07 p.m. from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Saturday’s game will depend upon a St. Cloud victory over the Beavers. A loss would mean the Huskies will play a consolation game at 4 p.m. Saturday; a win and they will play at 7 p.m. Other teams in the North Star College Cup include the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who host the tournament. Both Husky games can be heard on KVSC.
