SCSU Football Drops Heartbreaker to MSUM
The St. Cloud State Football Season came to a heartbreaking end, falling in the final game of the season 13-10 to Minnesota State Moorhead.
Going into the game, both teams knew a postseason berth the Mineral Water Bowl December 1st was on the line. After a tightly contested battle Saturday, it resulted in the Dragons punching their ticket to a bowl game to finish the season.
The game started slow for both teams, with only a 27 yard Adam Stage field goal being the lone scoring of the first half. On a cold day in Moorhead, both defenses dominated all sides of the field while the offense struggled to find their stride in the game. The Huskies missed a pair of chances in the first half as the Dragons fumbled twice in the first half.
With a 3-0 and a lot on the line in the game, St. Cloud State knew headed into the 3rd quarter they needed a spark on the road against the Dragons. On the first drive of the 2nd half, junior Dwayne Lawhorn led his offense on a 10 play 75-yard drive to push the Huskies lead to 10-0. It was the game’s first touchdown and the Huskies could not have asked for a better start to the second half.
But the Dragons would respond. Immediately on the next drive, the Dragons offense dominated the Huskies defense on their first drive of the third quarter. An 11 play 65-yard touchdown drive sparked the Dragons into a game that felt it had been jolted with new life after only a 3 point first half.
While it felt things were about to swing for both offenses, the Huskies went cold. Three consecutive drives the Minnesota State Moorhead defense stood up the Huskies looking to build a lead.
As the Huskies struggled, the Dragons came up with two field goals. The second field goal for Minnesota State Moorhead came with just 0:59 left in the 4th quarter, putting the game and season all on the Huskies offense.
Starting on their own 27, the Huskies were able to get it to the Moorhead 34-yard line with just seven seconds left. On the leg of kicker Adam Stage trying to tie the game, a 51-yard field goal sailed wide left as the heartbroken Huskies saw their season end.
Despit a game of frustration and missed chances, the Huskies had their best season under current head coach Scott Underwood since a 12-win season in 2013.
