Critical conference points were on the line for the St. Cloud State University women’s soccer team on Sunday night in St. Cloud.  It took longer than 90 minutes, but it was St. Cloud State that was on the end of the winning score line defeating the University of Minensota-Duluth 2-1 in overtime.

The Huskies came out with great energy in the opening moments of the contest, and it resulted in a corner kick goal in the 2nd minute. SCSU junior Brook Bares laced a lovely corner kick to the near post that found junior forward Hannah Marion on the end of the pass for the game’s first goal to put the Huskies up 1-0.

 

During the remaining minutes of the first half, SCSU controlled the pace of play. UMD went into the half with some confidence and leading the shots on goal category 8-3.

 

UMD came out strong in the second half, certainly hungry for the equalizing goal. But a tackle on SCSU forward Maria Kass by UMD defender Erika Hjort drew a red card from the official on UMD’s Hjort, putting the Bulldogs down a player for the remainder of the game.

 

Two minutes later, junior forward Nan Glinsek lobbed a shot a few yards outside of the box that sailed over the hands of freshman SCSU goalkeeper Zoe Welsh. That goal would tie the game at 1-1.

 

Despite a quality late chance by the Huskies, 90 minutes were gone in the contest. Still tied at 1-1, the critical conference game was sent into overtime.

 

Three minutes into the overtime possession, the Huskies used a take away in the midfield to develop a scoring chance finding junior Monica Majeski who slipped a beautiful touch in front of UMD goal keeper Sisley Ng. Hannah Marion was at the end of the pass and tapped it into the goal that sealed the win for St. Cloud State.

 

Freshman goal keeper Zoe Welsh was strong in net for the Huskies, featuring a total of nine saves and picking up the victory.  Hannah Marion collected both goals in the contest for St. Cloud State and also led in shots with 5 total.

 

The Huskies will look ahead to a pair of NSIC match ups on the road, Friday September 14 against  #23 Bemidji State at 3pm and Sunday September 16 versus the University of Minnesota – Crookston at 1pm.
