Hockey day Minnesota did not disappoint. St. Cloud hosted Hockey day this last weekend and it turned out to be a very successful day. The City of St. Cloud did a fantastic job setting themselves up this weekend on the shores of Lake George. The one team that didn’t have a great weekend was the Men’s hockey team. The huskies lost 5-2 to the Mankato Mavericks on Saturday night.
The Mavericks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Connor Mackey and added another at the 13:56 marker at the first. The Huskies would respond late in the first as Jon Lizotte would net his 3rd goal of the year. After cutting the deficient to 3-2 in the second on a goal from goal leader Robby Jackson the huskies couldn’t put together anything else, as they would fall 5-2. Zeb Knutson netted two goals to lead MSU.
It was another short outing for goaltender Jeff Smith. Smith was pulled after seeing 26 minutes of action and making 10 saves. It was the second home series in a row that Smith was pulled for Freshman David Hrenak. Robby Jackson netted his team leading 10th goal of the season in the contest.
The Huskies dropped from number 3 to number 5 in the latest USCHO poll. They will be taking on number 9 ranked Minnesota Duluth this upcoming weekend at Amsoil Arena. Duluth is coming off of a sweep against North Dakota. St. Cloud will have to be on top of their game if they hope to turn the 2018 season around.
