Archived: Victims Identified In Fatal Crash Involving Horse-and-Buggy in Avon
AVON, Minn. (AP) – Two people riding in a horse-drawn buggy in Stearns County were killed when the buggy was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The sheriff’s office has now identified the victims as 72-year-old Robert Alois Keppers and 66-year-old May Joan Keppers, both of Avon.
The sheriff’s office says the crash happened just after 11:15 a.m. Sunday on County Road 9 north of Avon. The buggy was traveling along the shoulder of the road when a pickup truck driven by 23-year-old Marc Lucas Knapp of Avon struck it from behind, sending it into the east ditch.
The couple in the buggy died at the scene and their bodies have been sent to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office for autopsies. The horse pulling the buggy was also severely injured and died.
The crash is still under investigation. Many agencies assisted with the crash site including filming and photographing the scene for reconstruction. The sheriff’s office has the Ford F150 and the buggy in storage.
