Huskies Dominate Northern State
Thursday January 24th The Huskies ousted the #25 ranked Northern State Wolves in front of a big crowd in Halenbeck. The huskies proved to be the better dogs all night long as they out classed the #25 ranked team in the country all night long. The match started the wrong way for the wolves right off the bat as they forfeited 125 lbs. to the Huskies giving young red shirt sophomore Holden Youngs his 2nd win.
The wolves would bounce back though getting 4 points back as Brandon Briggs lost a major decision 13-5. Then at 141 lbs Garrett Aldrich faced what was supposed to be one of his tougher opponents up to this point. Instead what proceeded was a headlock clinic as Aldrich would hit the big move twice in the 1st period. As a young wrestler you are always told that the headlock rarely works but as Garrett demonstrated when set up correctly it works on the best of opponents. Aldrich cruised to a 19-3 tech fall with 1:08 still left in the 1st period. At 149 the Huskies decided to rest #3 ranked James Pleski and opted to let Travis Swanson to take on #10 Caden Moore. Swanson battled hard and showed just how deep this team is as he went the distance with Moore even though he ended up losing the bout by 6-4 decision.
The second half would be all Huskies as SCSU won the next 6 weight classes with 4 straight pins. #7 Jake Barzowski kicked off his match with a clean inside trip that should make his highlight reel. He would continue to take down Walker Carr and ended up winning by major decision 10-1. Not to be outdone #9 Devin Fitzpatrick hit an inside trip as well as pinned him in a tight cow catcher to up St cloud’s lead. The Huskies would open the flood gates getting 3 straight pins after that. #3 Kolten Eischens, Chance Hemlick, and Vince Deitz all pined their guys to pour on a total of 18 team points within a 12-minute span. Heavy weight Zach Mueller iced the match with a dominating 9-2 match to give the Huskies a 42-7 win over #25 Northern State, and their 41st straight dual win.
Huskies continue to march their way towards Clevland leaving nothing in their path hopefully this stretch of success will help them in their quest to become back-to-back champions for the second time in 5 years. While the absence of Velasquez and Pleski was concerning coach Costanzo says he is giving the two a break which is probably well over due as both are ranked wrestlers and tend to get into long grueling matches. The Huskies continue wrestling on the road as they face their next 2 opponents on the road before returning to Halenbeck hall to face off with the Minnesota State Mavericks.
