#4 Huskies Ride 6-Game Win Streak into Upper Iowa Midweek
#4 St. Cloud State (19-3, 7-1 NSIC) travels to Fayette, Iowa on Wednesday to take on the Upper Iowa Peacocks (6-7, 3-5 NSIC) in a midweek two-game set beginning at noon.
The Huskies are in the midst of a six-game winning streak dating back to their series-clinching rubber game win at Minnesota State-Mankato. Upper Iowa has yet to win a series in the young Northern Sun regular season, falling 1-2 in weekend sets against UMD and Northern coupled with a midweek spit versus U-Mary.
Cal Giese and Matt Osterberg are expected to take the hill for SCSU. Giese will be making his third start of the season, owning a 2.89 ERA across 9.1 innings with a .598 opponent OPS and a 22.5% strikeout rate. His sophomore counterpart in the Huskies’ midweek rotation struggled in his start at Winona State, failing to get through the fourth. Osterberg found himself in many deep counts throughout the outing and only picked up four swinging strikes on 71 pitches.
The Peacocks are led by former St. Cloud State backup catcher Jeremy Ische, in his first season as their head coach. Ische served as Nate Hammes’ and Travis Enger’s understudy in 2009 and 2011 respectively, posting an OPS mark of better than .735 in each campaign.
Upper Iowa likely will throw redshirt-sophomore Alexander Morales in one of the games, a righthander who has fired 18.0 innings to the tune of a 2.50 ERA. Morales punched out a career-best 7 in his last midweek bump against U-Mary. The Peacocks’ staff has struggled to limit walks, putting batters on at an unsightly 13.0% rate.
Anchoring an impressive heart of the order, Upper Iowa third baseman Zac Cain slashes .444/.483/.574 with four doubles and a home run. Rightfielder Tony Salato is hitting .417 with four doubles and 6 RBI. Youngsters A.J. Friedrich (.422/.517/.578, 2B, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 17.3% BB) and Steve Diderrich Jr. (.289/.320/.533, 2 2B, 3 HR, 13 RBI) have impressed in their roles at first and second, respectively.
Both games of the midweek series can be heard on the KVSC Sports Stream, with Husky Den Pregame at 11:30 a.m. There is a possibility of the series being moved to a different site, follow @KVSCSports on Twitter for updates.
