Archived: A Sauk Rapids Man Leads Deputies On A Chase Thursday
A 47-year-old Sauk Rapids man led a Benton County Sheriff’s deputy on a chase Thursday that ended in a field in Sherbune County.
The Benton County Sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle speeding and swerving while traveling eastbound on Highway-23 without working taillights. The vehicle fled after the deputy turned on his sirens to initiate a traffic stop.
The Benton County deputy learned the vehicle was stolen out of St. Cloud. According to authorities the driver of the stolen vehicle, Earnest Carlstrom turned onto Benton County Road 25 and accelerated to 65-miles-per-hour.
Carlstrom eventually crossed into Sherburne County on County Road 20 where a Sherburne County Sheriff’s deputy deployed spike strips. The spike strips popped Carlstrom’s two driver-side tires causing him to lose control around a curve on 72nd Street Southeast.Carlstrom’s vehicle came to a stop in a field where deputies from Benton and Sherburne Counties arrested him.
Authorities said Earnest Carlstrom resisted arrest and showed signs of intoxication. Carlstrom was arrested on charges for Fleeing Police in a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Driving After Cancellation, and Driving Under the Influence.
Carlstrom is currently being held in the Benton County Jail.
